Cocoon, Amnesia // Monday 23rd August 2010
Monday nights in Ibiza are legendary, with some of the worlds finest DJs competing against each other at some of the biggest clubs on the island. Now in it’s eleventh season, Cocoon continues to stay at the top of its game, and with a host of new guests on board this year Sven has made sure that Cocoon has been full to bursting point throughout the season.
Notoriously busy all season round, August is when it really hits it’s peak, with clubbers descending on Ibiza from all around the world. One of the favoured nights on the Island, Cocoon is always one to feel the heat of this as everyone wants a bit of Papa Sven’s magic.
With line-ups over the past few weeks including Hawtin, Dubfire, Loco Dice and Marco Corola, the crowds of the past few weeks have been unmeasurable, but as we creep closer to the end of August, the crowds have finally started to thin out making for a much more enjoyable night all round.
The night’s line-up consisted of Sven Vath and Karotte in the main room, and Onur Ozer, Mar T and Tobi Neumann on the terrace; not one of Cocoon’s more mainstream line-ups, but a strong line-up of some of techno’s biggest party animals, favoured by those knowledgeable on the music scene.
Notoriously crazy German DJ Karotte played an absolutely astounding set in the main room and as everybody filtered into Cocoon fresh from the days delights of DC10, the atmosphere was electric.
With Turkish DJ Onur Ozer on the terrace, the crowds flitted between the two rooms, with the usual bottleneck of clubbers gathering at the entrances. There was also a noticeable gap left by the absence of workers selling laughing gas, due to the problems earlier in the season. Regardless of this, drinks were flowing and the crowds were happy and it’s fingers crossed for closing parties when we hear that laughing gas may well be making a welcome return onto the scene, albeit under a slightly more watchful eye.
Come 3am, Amnesia was comfortably busy; the crowd was packed but with room to move, and when Sven took to the helm there was a noteable shift of people from the terrace – not reflective on Tobi Neumann’s set, which was eclectic and deep throughout – but Sven was on top form and pulled the crowds in.
Now over 2 and-a-half months into the season, the dancers were finely tuned and had their ‘Party Animals’ routine perfected down to a t. Sven too, had his routine down to perfection and ended the night with his usual craziness, wrapping his head in toilet paper and throwing it down into the crowd. Half an hour later and the main room was a sea of toilet paper turbans and head scarves, and as the tired filtered out, it was the hardcore of clubbers that remained until the end.
One thing is for sure – Cocoon-mania has gone worldwide and as Sven travels the world, his fanbase grows stronger every year. The line-ups for the remainder of the season include appearances from Tiefschwarz, Villalobos and Loco Dice, as well as a very special Minus showcase with Richie Hawtin, Hobo, Marco Corola and Barem. Closing on the 27th September, Cocoon will no doubt go off with a giant bang and who knows what it shall hold for next year… We just know that we can’t wait to see what surprises Cocoon have up their sleeve to make sure that they finish their Ibiza 2010 season in true Cocoon style, in the way that only they know how.
