Ibiza reports on one of its worst tourist seasons ever

Hotels in on Ibiza during the tourist season this year registered an average occupancy rate of less than 65 percent, said a government publication.
The figures, which point to one of the worst tourist years on record for the sister island of Ibiza and Formentera confirm that trade was down 3.52 percent on the results of the 2008 season, and 8.28 percent worse than the outcome of 2006.
The bad outcome for this year, said tourist industry analysis’s has been fuelled by the downturn in numbers from key client markets, including the United Kingdom The recession and the weak pound meant a significant decline in custom, especially in the family holiday sector.
The area on Ibiza which has been worst hit this year has been Santa Eulalia where the Ibiza hotel occupancy rate was 7.66 percent down on what it had been in 2008.
In contrast, es Vila and surrounding areas claimed the best results with occupancy rates above the average for the island, at 68.79 percent. The northern area of Sant Joan also claimed “success” with an average of 68.43 percent.
